Malaysia: Aquaculture project in Pahang to start soon

The first of four aquaculture projects to rear freshwater fishes at a cost of RM10mil each will be operational by June, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said that Kuala Pahang had been chosen as the site for the launch, while the authorities were in the midst of identifying suitable locations in Johor, Kedah and Kelantan.  “The test bed project in Sepang which started a year ago using proven technology from Australia has harvested a good yield.  “All participants in this project will stand to receive a minimum payment of RM500 in the form of a dividend. “We are also looking at exporting these freshwater fishes as there is a high market demand overseas,” he said after launching the project here yesterday.  Najib, who is also the Pekan MP, said that the project would enable fishermen to earn additional income when they could not go out to sea during the monsoon season.  “The Government’s aspirations to eradicate hardcore poverty among fishermen will be realised with this project.  “We will also invest another RM20mil to build housing and basic amenities as a value-added package for the participants,” he added.
